I've just posted a full walk-through tutorial on Google Blogoscoped. Programming Google Android details how to create a "Where Are My Friends" application that reads your Android device's contacts list, geocodes your friend's addresses, and plots them on a live map.
 
It's fully up-to-date for Android version 1.0 and includes links to all the source code used in the tutorial, as well as an ongoing Open Source project.
